Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy. It has been proved to help treat a wide range of emotional and physical health conditions in adults, young people and children. CBT looks at how we think about a situation and how this affects the way we behave. In turn, our behaviours can affect how we think and our emotions. We work together in changing behaviours and thinking patterns, which can have an overall effect on emotions.
NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) provides evidence-based guidance on the most effective ways to treat ill health. CBT is recommended by NICE for the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression. We will discuss your specific difficulties and set goals for you to achieve. CBT is not a quick fix. It involves hard work during and between sessions. We will help you to decide which difficulties you wish to work on in order to help you improve your situation.We will also work on a relapse prevention plan at the end of treatment, so that you can continue to manage your own mental health on discharge. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal.
EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. I completed my training as an occupational therapist in 1996 and after a brief spell of working on a general ward, I went on to specialise in mental health, working both in hospital and in the community.
Having been particularly interested in cognitive behavioural therapy, I completed a basic skills course in 1999 and went on to complete a masters degree in psychosocial interventions and a post graduate diploma in cognitive behavioural psychotherapy. I am also trained in EMDR and DBT.
I have worked as a psychotherapist for the NHS for the last 13 years and during that time, helped to set up and teach on the IAPT high intensity CBT course at the University of Sheffield, for which our team won a Fellowship Award.
In the last 20 years I have worked with a diverse range of mental health problems with individuals and groups. I am particularly interested in helping people to understand how mental health problems develop, how they are maintained and most importantly, how they can be overcome.
I am a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and an accredited member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).
I have worked within an NHS Primary Care setting since 2010, providing assessment and treatment for common mental health difficulties for adults, and with students at a local college. I undertake regular clinical supervision and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) which ensures I develop and further my skills in line with evidence based research. I am a lecturer and supervisor of Trainee Cognitive Behavioural Therapists on the High Intensity Psychological Interventions (HIPI) course at the University of Sheffield. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) and Cognitive Behavioural Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) which is specifically developed for treating persistent depression.
I have had the pleasure of working with people from different backgrounds and aim to support them to increase confidence and attain recovery, through the use of evidence based treatment and an open, honest and safe therapeutic alliance.
I am an Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, with over 20 years experience in the NHS. I launched Yorkshire Psychotherapy in January 2015 and have since taken on Associates to offer a wide range of therapies to individuals and businesses.
I have worked in a number of roles for the NHS, over the past twenty years as both a Registered Mental Health Nurse, Manager and Psychotherapist. I provide Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement and Desensitisation (EMDR) for a range of common mental health problems, including anxiety, depression and trauma, as well as specialising in work related stress, bullying and harassment and mediation.
I undertake regular clinical supervision with an accredited supervisor, am DBS checked and have Public Liability Insurance.
I have had the privilege of working in CBT as a therapist, supervisor, and trainer for a number of years.
I was previously based in NHS Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Services in North Yorkshire and Leeds. My clinical work is now based at Yorkshire Psychotherapy and I continue to work for the University of Sheffield.
I worked within NHS mental health services for 14 years. I completed my CBT training in 2011 and I have extensive experience of using CBT to help people work with emotional problems such as:

I recognise just how difficult it can be to ask for help and to start a course of therapy. I believe it is important to provide a safe and supportive environment and establish a trusting therapeutic relationship from the outset. This can help people to take the necessary steps that will ultimately reduce emotional distress and improve the quality of their lives. CBT focuses on helping people to develop a better understanding of their difficulties and learn new ways of thinking and acting. I try to adopt a compassionate, non-judgmental, and collaborative approach with all patients.
I am also a qualified supervisor and have provided clinical supervision to individual therapists and groups, from trainees to more experienced therapists. I am a teacher, tutor, and clinical supervisor on two IAPT courses at the University of Sheffield: The Postgraduate Diploma in High Intensity Psychological Interventions, which trains future CBT Therapists, and the Postgraduate Certificate in Low Intensity Psychological Interventions, which trains future Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs). Furthermore, I am a trained assessor of Knowledge, Skills & Attitudes (KSA) portfolios and assist with the selection of trainees.
I have enjoyed delivering workshops and career talks to local universities and to the public. I also acted as a discussant for a symposium on ‘IAPT and Primary Care’ and delivered a workshop at the 2019 BABCP national conference. The title of the workshop was ‘Maximising your effectiveness as a CBT Therapist’. Indeed, spreading the word of CBT and that mental health matters is something I am very passionate about.
I receive regular clinical supervision and ensure I am up to date with the latest developments in CBT. I am committed to Continued Professional Development and I am an accredited member of the BABCP. I am DBS checked and have Public Liability Insurance.
My experience is varied and I have been privileged to work with brave and courageous people from many different types of backgrounds and cultures who have had a range of difficulties that they have sought help for.
These have included; OCD, Trauma / PTSD, GAD, Health Anxiety, Social Phobia, Panic and Depression. I have a particular interest in Eating Disorders and currently work at a specialist eating disorder service.
I am qualified in a number of therapies including, Counselling, CBT, EMDR, CBASP, Mindfulness and CFT.
My approach is to create a safe space to reach a shared understanding with people of their problems that are impacting on them. Helping them improve the quality of their lives by learning and developing strategies to move forward now and for their future.

I have 23 years’ experience of working within the NHS as a Specialist Mental Health Social Worker. I am also an experienced Practice Educator.

I am a Registered Mental Health Nurse and EMDR practitioner with over 28 years experience of working within the NHS.
My experience has been primarily working with adults with complex mental health problems but I have also worked as a specialist addictions nurse. My personal and professional experience has informed me that many mental health presentations are due to ‘traumatic’ events that individuals have experienced in their lives. I believe that approaches that help individuals process these experiences are key to a meaningful recovery and personal fulfillment.

I am interested in health and wellbeing and believe that physical and mental health are inexorably linked. I practice yoga, meditation and run regularly, I also study nutrition and how this can be used to improve overall health and wellbeing.
