What to Expect at Your First Therapy Session

We know for some people the decision to start therapy can be a daunting one. Aside from anything else, not knowing what to expect at your first therapy session can be nerve-wracking. Today, we’re going to walk you through the process and hopefully make the whole experience a little easier.

Your First Therapy Session

Your first therapy session is a screening appointment focused on identifying the best treatment and the right therapist for you. Think of it as a fact-finding exercise. We’ll ask you what symptoms you’re experiencing, what’s been happening recently and what has led you to seek treatment. We’ll also talk about your current thoughts and emotions and what’s been going on in your life more generally.

Everything is confidential, so there’s no need to worry about disclosing anything personal. It’s important to be completely open and honest about everything because it will help us make sure we get you the best treatment possible.

Based on this discussion, we’ll create a treatment plan, establishing a goal for discharging you and explaining how we’re going to work towards it. We’ll tell you what will happen going forward, the number of sessions we think you’ll need and the frequency we’d recommend. If you’re happy to come back, you’ll be able to book future appointments right away.

Still Feeling Nervous?

If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can bring someone with you for support or to fill in the gaps if you feel unable to fully articulate your situation.

You may find it helpful to write a personal summary of how you are before attending. You can then refer to your notes during your session and make sure you’re communicating everything you hoped to. It’s impossible to overshare. Even things that seem small and insignificant can play an important role in helping us find the right treatment.

Remember, there are no stupid questions. If you have any queries, just ask. We are more than happy to explain your treatment in detail and answer any concerns you may have.
